There weren't any former URI football players competing in the NFL in Week 1 or 2, but it’s almost a certainty you’ll see some Rams hit the gridiron at some point this season. Five players who spent time in Kingston either made an NFL roster or practice squad in the run-up to the 2020 season.
Everything is in place for the URI men’s and women’s basketball teams for their 2020-21 seasons. From rosters to schedules, both Ram squads are ready to hit the ground running. Now they just have to hope that there is a 2020 season.
Jim Norman, who passed on July 28 at 85, was fondly remembered this week as the “Voice of the Rams.”
There was a shoe-shaped shadow above fall sports at URI, and last Friday, it finally dropped. Both the Atlantic 10 and CAA conferences made moves to, at the very least, postpone their seasons to next year, if not outright cancel them.

KINGSTON – The end of a calendar year will bring about some self-reflection. The end of a decade will make that introspection even more probing. The University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team took some time after practice on Tuesday to reflect on the first half of their 2019 season, an…
PROVIDENCE — The next time you’re short on patience with the Providence basketball Friars, do yourself a favor and go to YouTube and type “South Florida v. Providence.”
KINGSTON – The University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team hadn’t played a real game since December 6, so, an extra five minute period against Western Kentucky? Bring it on, said the well-rested Rams.
PROVIDENCE — Where has this PC Friar team been?
KINGSTON – If all goes to plan for the University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team this winter, fans will notice changes all across the board. From personnel to coaching style to on and off-court chemistry, the Rams say a lot has changed since they last played publicly, six months ago.
Tammi Reiss has only been on the job for two months, but the new URI women's head coach has hit the ground running. Below is an excerpt of an interview with the new coach conducted this week. For the full story, pick up the Friday edition of the Narragansett Times.
Michael Gallagher took last year off but it appears he’s ready to match or better his performance during the 2016-17 season with the Rhode Island College wrestling team.
WORCESTER, Mass. - David Cox is so experienced when it comes to the Princeton system that he could easily coach in it. His University of Rhode Island Rams don’t run a system very similar to the ball screen-happy Princeton offense, but Cox’s prep work paid off in Saturday’s 79-63 win over Hol…
KINGSTON – David Cox has been on the job officially as the URI men’s head basketball coach for a little over a month. His staff – currently populated by hold-overs from the Dan Hurley era – has yet to expand, but Cox has been far from idle in his short time at the reins.
KINGSTON - It may seem an odd starting point for the URI football team this spring, but they’re drawing inspiration from an 80-year old yarn about gold digging to prepare for the 2018 season. The team has adopted the social media hashtag “3MoreFeet” this preseason, culled from the book Think…
Pat Maybach continues to be a key pitcher for the Salve Regina baseball team.
KINGSTON - From the outside looking in, URI’s promotion of David Cox to head coach of the men’s basketball program was a foregone conclusion the second Dan Hurley vacated his seat on the bench. At Cox’s introductory press conference on Friday morning, it became clear that he was not just han…
KINGSTON - Raphael Cerrato has grown accustomed to a high level of success as the head coach of the URI baseball team. His Rams compiled 50 Atlantic 10 wins through his first three years leading the program, but the early consistent winning has given way to a frustrating 2018.
KINGSTON – Even before the URI men’s basketball team was making waves in the NCAA Tournament last weekend, there was ample speculation about the future of head coach Dan Hurley. Having turned around the Rams in a major way in his six years at the helm, Hurley was the purported target of both…
PITTSBURGH - No. 2 Duke might as well have been a 50-foot high brick wall from URI’s point of view on Saturday. During their Round of 32 game, the Rams couldn’t find a way over, through or around the Blue Devils, who comfortably cruised to a 87-62 victory and Sweet Sixteen berth.
PITTSBURGH - The Rams are on the precipice. The University of Rhode Island is in the Round of 32 for the second straight year, and again the only thing standing in the way of a Sweet Sixteen berth is a big-name, big-conference team.
PITTSBURGH - Fatts Russell, say hello to the national spotlight. The freshman URI guard scored 15 points, locked down on Trae Young on defense and a trio of timely 3-pointers in his NCAA Tournament debut against Oklahoma.
WASHINGTON - In Sunday’s second half deficit against Davidson, URI had finally found a hole they couldn’t fully worm their way out of. Playing for their second straight Atlantic 10 title, the Rams started the second half on a 4-18 cold stretch from the floor before recovering to take a brief lead.
WASHINGTON - It was far from certain that Trae Young and Oklahoma would be selected to play in the NCAA Tournament, but they heard their name called on Sunday. Despite losing eight of their last 10 games, the Sooners have been given a 10-seed and will play URI in Pittsburgh on Thursday.
KINGSTON – Following a season that saw them rip through the Atlantic 10, the University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team earned some postseason accolades, but not nearly up to the level they thought they deserved.

KINGSTON - Look at the resume of any NCAA Tournament-bound team and you’re likely to find some head-scratching losses. The URI men’s basketball team has been notable this season for their ability to sidestep lesser foes, keeping their ‘Bad Losses’ column clean all season.
KINGSTON- Let the party begin.
KINGSTON – As much as the URI men’s basketball team winning the Atlantic 10 tournament last year was a culmination of five years of grueling hard work by head coach Dan Hurley, it was equally a testament to the behind-the-scenes machinations of athletic director Thorr Bjorn. Eleven years int…
KINGSTON – URI head coach Dan Hurley hasn’t had much of a chance this year to see how his team responds to losing. A positive side effect of his team’s 16-game win streak coming to an end was an opportunity to see just how mature some of his younger players are.
KINGSTON – It may not have been another sell-out crowd Tuesday night at the Ryan Center when URI took on Richmond, but the noise from the fans who were there easily masked that fact. The 7000-plus in the building created an intense atmosphere during the Rams 16th-straight win, an 85-67 drubb…
KINGSTON - The gulf between the URI men’s basketball team and the rest of the Atlantic 10 conference has been a vast chasm all season. On Friday night against second-place Davidson, they dropped a stick of dynamite in and opened up what looks to be an insurmountable lead in the standings.
KINGSTON - Jim Fleming is not looking to reinvent the wheel on the recruiting trail. The head coach of the University of Rhode Island football team has a simple formula that he believes can lead to a turnaround for a program that has become accustomed to losing.
KINGSTON - The University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team earned a tough road win against VCU last Friday, which not only extended their overall win streak to 14 games but sent them into the conference bye week with their highest-ever ranking in the AP national poll.
KINGSTON – For all the success the URI men’s basketball team has had over the past year, head coach Dan Hurley still isn’t about to let his players forget about their few-and-far between slip-ups. They may be riding a 10-game win streak, and have a newly-minted #24 next to their name in the …
KINGSTON - There was almost no question that the URI men’s basketball team would build up a significant lead against rival UMass on Wednesday. The Atlantic 10 leading Rams have decimated conference foes so far this season, and were facing a Minutemen squad with only seven scholarship players…
KINGSTON - The URI men’s basketball team put out a loud-and-clear message to the rest of the Atlantic 10 on Saturday morning: this is our league this year, you’re just playing in it. After a nip-and-tuck first half against St. Bonaventure, the Rams surged out to a double-figure lead that las…
KINGSTON – If there was one thing this year’s URI basketball team had yet to prove, it was an ability to win on the road. They pushed that monkey off their back with full force in the past week, winning their first two conference away games to carve out a first-place position in the Atlantic 10.
KINGSTON – Dan Hurley was nothing but honest about his team’s performance against La Salle on Wednesday night. With a major snowstorm just hours away from shellacking the state, the Rams looked like they were playing in the midst of a blizzard at times. Hurley was clearly not thrilled with h…
KINGSTON - The start of conference play marks a shift to tougher competition for most teams. For the University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team, the first Atlantic 10 game of the year was practically a vacation. The Rams bombarded George Mason with a dazzling offensive display on a sno…

KINGSTON - Nothing came easy for the URI men’s basketball team on Saturday against the College of Charleston. They trailed for most of the first half due to a frontcourt mismatch, and found themselves in small holes for most of the second as Cougar guard Grant Riller exploded for 21 points.
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The defensive intensity of the URI men’s basketball team made the trip down south, but it seems that a fair amount of the team left their jump shots behind in Kingston. Despite forcing 24 turnovers and 13 steals, the Rams fell to the Crimson Tide on the road, 68-64.
KINGSTON – Down in the second half and seemingly on the verge of major trouble at an unbelievably loud Ryan Center on Saturday night, the Providence Friars turned to their point guard with the hope he could save the day against rival Rhode Island.
KINGSTON - Since URI last defeated Providence College in 2009, all the way to today, Fatts Russell has gone from a 10-year old elementary schoolboy to a college freshman. For this entry into the long-running rivalry, Fatts was on the court for the Rams and that proved to be just the spark hi…
KINGSTON - The annual meeting between URI and PC is always a high-intensity clash, even in the years when one or both sides happen to be down. Add in NCAA tournament aspirations and top-50 RPI rankings, and the feud on the court figures to become even more heated in this year’s addition to t…
KINGSTON - The gulf in talent between URI and Brown’s men’s basketball teams rarely seems to matter. The Rams always have to fight their way past the gritty Bears, even when they are clearly the superior team. That trend evaporated on Tuesday night, when the Rams entered as 20-point favorite…
KINGSTON - It took the URI men’s basketball team five minutes of Sunday’s matinee against Holy Cross to turn a nail-biter into an 88-66 laugher. The Rams exploded for 14-straight points, sparked by the stellar offensive play of Jared Terrell and Andre Berry.
The Middlebury field hockey team stands today as the Division III national champion and a key performer all season long for the Panthers was junior Molly Freeman.
