There was a shoe-shaped shadow above fall sports at URI, and last Friday, it finally dropped. Both the Atlantic 10 and CAA conferences made moves to, at the very least, postpone their seasons to next year, if not outright cancel them.

KINGSTON – The end of a calendar year will bring about some self-reflection. The end of a decade will make that introspection even more probing. The University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team took some time after practice on Tuesday to reflect on the first half of their 2019 season, an…

WORCESTER, Mass. - David Cox is so experienced when it comes to the Princeton system that he could easily coach in it. His University of Rhode Island Rams don’t run a system very similar to the ball screen-happy Princeton offense, but Cox’s prep work paid off in Saturday’s 79-63 win over Hol…

KINGSTON – David Cox has been on the job officially as the URI men’s head basketball coach for a little over a month. His staff – currently populated by hold-overs from the Dan Hurley era – has yet to expand, but Cox has been far from idle in his short time at the reins.

KINGSTON - It may seem an odd starting point for the URI football team this spring, but they’re drawing inspiration from an 80-year old yarn about gold digging to prepare for the 2018 season. The team has adopted the social media hashtag “3MoreFeet” this preseason, culled from the book Think…

KINGSTON - From the outside looking in, URI’s promotion of David Cox to head coach of the men’s basketball program was a foregone conclusion the second Dan Hurley vacated his seat on the bench. At Cox’s introductory press conference on Friday morning, it became clear that he was not just han…

KINGSTON - Raphael Cerrato has grown accustomed to a high level of success as the head coach of the URI baseball team. His Rams compiled 50 Atlantic 10 wins through his first three years leading the program, but the early consistent winning has given way to a frustrating 2018.

KINGSTON – Even before the URI men’s basketball team was making waves in the NCAA Tournament last weekend, there was ample speculation about the future of head coach Dan Hurley. Having turned around the Rams in a major way in his six years at the helm, Hurley was the purported target of both…

PITTSBURGH - No. 2 Duke might as well have been a 50-foot high brick wall from URI’s point of view on Saturday. During their Round of 32 game, the Rams couldn’t find a way over, through or around the Blue Devils, who comfortably cruised to a 87-62 victory and Sweet Sixteen berth.

PITTSBURGH - The Rams are on the precipice. The University of Rhode Island is in the Round of 32 for the second straight year, and again the only thing standing in the way of a Sweet Sixteen berth is a big-name, big-conference team.

WASHINGTON - In Sunday’s second half deficit against Davidson, URI had finally found a hole they couldn’t fully worm their way out of. Playing for their second straight Atlantic 10 title, the Rams started the second half on a 4-18 cold stretch from the floor before recovering to take a brief lead.

WASHINGTON - It was far from certain that Trae Young and Oklahoma would be selected to play in the NCAA Tournament, but they heard their name called on Sunday. Despite losing eight of their last 10 games, the Sooners have been given a 10-seed and will play URI in Pittsburgh on Thursday.

KINGSTON - Look at the resume of any NCAA Tournament-bound team and you’re likely to find some head-scratching losses. The URI men’s basketball team has been notable this season for their ability to sidestep lesser foes, keeping their ‘Bad Losses’ column clean all season.

KINGSTON – As much as the URI men’s basketball team winning the Atlantic 10 tournament last year was a culmination of five years of grueling hard work by head coach Dan Hurley, it was equally a testament to the behind-the-scenes machinations of athletic director Thorr Bjorn. Eleven years int…

KINGSTON – URI head coach Dan Hurley hasn’t had much of a chance this year to see how his team responds to losing. A positive side effect of his team’s 16-game win streak coming to an end was an opportunity to see just how mature some of his younger players are.

KINGSTON – It may not have been another sell-out crowd Tuesday night at the Ryan Center when URI took on Richmond, but the noise from the fans who were there easily masked that fact. The 7000-plus in the building created an intense atmosphere during the Rams 16th-straight win, an 85-67 drubb…

KINGSTON - The URI men’s basketball team put out a loud-and-clear message to the rest of the Atlantic 10 on Saturday morning: this is our league this year, you’re just playing in it. After a nip-and-tuck first half against St. Bonaventure, the Rams surged out to a double-figure lead that las…

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The defensive intensity of the URI men’s basketball team made the trip down south, but it seems that a fair amount of the team left their jump shots behind in Kingston. Despite forcing 24 turnovers and 13 steals, the Rams fell to the Crimson Tide on the road, 68-64.
