CRANSTON – The Avengers golf team finished the regular season tied with Bishop Hendricken; both teams sporting fantastic 11-1 overall records. The closeness of the two teams carried over to last week’s RIIL State Golf Championship, where the two teams shot identical scores of 646.

EG and Hendricken were only bested by Wheeler, who had a collective stroke score of 645. The Avengers had a host of boys who posted strong scores in the crowded field, led by Justin Grenier’s third-place finish.

Grenier shot a 74 on Tuesday and a 79 during Wednesday’s final round. He fell one stroke shy of second place and 10 strokes short of state champion Mason Gilman (Middletown).

Grenier had three birdies in Round 1 and a pair of them in the final round.

Jack Fox also had an outstanding two-day effort, netting himself seventh place thanks to scores of 79 and 77.

Jack McMullen and Ethan Mossey also made the individual cut in the two-day tournament, finishing 23rd and 25th, respectively.

EG’s only team loss in the regular season came against Bishop Hendricken, but they also defeated the Hawks in an April dual-meet with Toll Gate.

The 11 wins this season was the most for an EG team since the 2016 season, when they had an identical record. They won 10 games each of the last two seasons.

The school won their only state golf title in 1993, and posted their highest-ever win total of 13 in 2002.

Grenier and Fox were the team’s only seniors this season. McMullen and Mossey both made the state cut as sophomores.

Joe Allen – the squad’s only junior – and Jack Euston were the two other EG golfers to get invited to the selective tournament. Neither made the cut, posting two-day totals of 177 and 178, respectively.
