EAST GREENWICH- The Miriam Hospital is making strides in addressing obesity with the opening of their new Center for Weight and Wellness on South County Trail in East Greenwich.

The Center for Weight and Wellness is a combination of the Miriam Hospital Weight Management Program and the Center for Bariatric Surgery, bringing together the two programs to offer a variety of services for patients.

“Treating obesity can be challenging,” said Siva Vithiananthan, M.D, chief of minimally invasive and bariatric surgery at The Center for Bariatric Surgery, and co-director of The Center for Weight & Wellness in a statement. “A lot of programs are not successful because they don’t offer patients cohesive treatment. Our center is one-stop comprehensive care.”

The services at the Center for Weight and Wellness include dietary counseling, on-site phycological evaluations, comprehensive evaluations of medical, dietary and behavioral risks for weight gain, maintenance programs for long-term support, special treatment groups for emotional eating and diabetes management, medical weight management consultation and a full continuum of services matched to patient needs.

“The biggest benefit to patients at the Center for Weight & Wellness is the combined expertise available to help them gain a greater understanding of obesity and receive coordinated comprehensive treatment,” said Vincent Pera, M.D., director of Weight Management at The Miriam Hospital, and co-director of The Center for Weight & Wellness. “Our patients will be able to access and choose from different treatment options not available elsewhere, and all located at one convenient site.”

The team of specialists at The Center for Weight and Wellness help each patient in figuring out the long-term solutions available to patients based on there weight in addition to psychological and other medical conditions that may be present.

“Our team provides the consultation and support to help each patient make the best decisions throughout their weight loss, whether they choose to undergo bariatric surgery or follow a medical weight loss plan,” the Center website reads. “The Center for Weight & Wellness provides the most comprehensive, integrated care, to support each patient’s journey to wellness.”

The two combined programs that will now be a part of the Center for Weight and Wellness include the current weight management program at Miriam Hospital that provides comprehensive treatment for those who mild, moderate or severely overweight using a combination of medical monitoring, behavioral therapy, exercise instruction and nutrition education.

The Center for Weight and Wellness is located at 1377 South County Trail, East Greenwich, and is open Monday through Thursday from 3 to 7:30 p.m.,Tuesday and Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to noon and Wednesday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. More information can be found at weighlossri.org.
