New Yorker sets new course record at Goddard Park

Sam Toolin finished second at Saturday’s Ocean State

America’s finest high school middle distance runner, Katelyn Tuohy blazed to victory Saturday at the Ocean State Cross Country Invitational at Goddard Park.  Tuohy, a Junior from North Rockland, NY broke the course record which was held by Kelsey Chmiel (Saratago, NY) by a whopping 90 seconds clocking in at 16:06.9.

“I knew Katelyn was in a league of her own” said Portmouth’s Elizabeth Sullivan who finished second in 18:06. “Everyone expected her to win and to break the course record.”

The athletic and powerful  5’ 4” phenom seized the lead at the gun and never looked back.  Running far ahead of the field, she took the 1 mile split in 4:56 which was one second faster than the boys went out in. Tuohy was named Gatorade’s Female High School Athlete of the Year after she won at the Nike Nationals last year  She set the National Record for 3200 meters at 9:47.8 and holds  the Under 20 Women’s National 5K mark which she set last spring on the track in 15:37.

Tuohy’s Ocean State victory comes off a summer where she describes her training as “Much better than last year”. Poised and confident, it will certainly be interesting to watch as the remainder of her  season unfolds. Tuoy’s win set the stage for her North Rockland team win (1-4--8-13-35) 61. Lexington was second with 65 points followed by the NK girls lead by Sullivan’s runner-up finish.

Saint Anthony’s Matt Payamps won the Boys Championship race with a time of 15:50.  North Kingston’s Sam Toolin looked to be in good form outkicking another St A’s runner  Brendan Dearie down the home stretch.  Toolin was timed in 16:07. Saint Anthony’s won the boys team title followed by North Kingston 2nd and Natick 3rd.
