EAST GREENWICH – Five total defensive turnovers helped spark the Avenger offense, and senior running back Kevin Licciardi torched the defense for four touchdowns on 207 yards as EG handed Division II-A Classical their first league loss, 42-21.
The Avengers exploded for four touchdowns in the second frame to go ahead, 35-6, at Carcieri Field. The burst was all they’d need, as they’d score once more and let their defense finish out the Purple.
EG was up 7-0 in the first quarter on Licciardi’s first time in the end zone, on a one-yard run.
In the second quarter, sophomore Jack McMullen picked off a pass and set up the next score; a 15-yard strike from junior quarterback Conrad Swanson to sophomore Andrew Plympton, who had four catches on 58 yards.
Swanson completed 15-of-27 (56%), for 209 yards and two touchdowns. It was his third straight game with no turnovers, and he also wasn’t sacked.
A fumble recovery by sophomore Josh Petteruti led to EG’s next touchdown; Licciardi on a 21-yard carry. Licciardi ran the ball 27 times, a 7.7 yards per carry average, to get over 200. He also caught one pass for 14 yards. He ran in EG’s next two scores, from 46 and 24 yards out.
EG’s last score was a 28-yard reception by Jack Fox, who had three catches for 58 yards total. McMullen caught three for eleven yards and was 6-for-6 on conversion kicks. Matt Licciardi had one catch for 41 yards; freshman Curtis Browne had two for 24.
The Avengers had 418 total yards compared to Classical’s 309 (172 rushing and 144 passing). EG’s time of possession in the first half was 14:29 compared to 9:31 for the Purple.
Plympton added two more interceptions on defense, and Jack Matus snatched one as well. M. Licciardi led the defense with six tackles and four assists from the linebacker spot. Petteruti had four tackles and three assists; C.J. Copolla had four and two, and also had EG’s one sack, a seven yard loss for Classical.
On Saturday at 1:00 p.m., EG take on Woonsocket (1-1) at Barry Field.
