Tuesday was packed with playoff action for a slew of local teams.
In volleyball, the Prout and Coventry girls volleyball teams advanced to Saturday's Division I final. The Crusaders earned a chance to defend their state title after a dramatic 21-25, 25-15, 20-25, 25-11, 19-17 win over Mount St. Charles. Coventry didn't need as much time, ending North Kingstown's season with a 25-23, 25-18, 25-15 win.
Prout and Coventry meet in the Division I finals Saturday at 1 p.m. at URI's Keaney Gymnasium.
In Division III boys soccer, West Warwick's "rebuilding" season ended in the semifinals with a 3-0 loss to Classical. The Wizards held the Purple scoreless in the first half, the first time Classical did not score a goal in the first half this season.
Exeter-West Greenwich won the nightcap at Cranston Stadium, winning 2-1 over Tiverton on Cristofer Lopez's header with less than two minutes to play. EWG plays Classical Saturday at RIC at 3 p.m.
In Division II boys soccer, No. 1-seeded East Greenwich survived a scare from Prout - last season's Division III champion - thanks to two second-half goals from Rob Bialy.
The Avengers will play Smithfield - the top seed from II-North which won in a shootout over the No. 2 seed from II-South, Westerly - Saturday at 1 p.m. at RIC for the Division II title.
In Division I girls soccer, South Kingstown shut out Barrington 2-0 while East Greenwich took down D-I newcomer Prout, 4-0.
In Division II, Exeter-West Greenwich toppled Mount Hope 3-1. The Knights will play Ponaganset at 12 p.m. at Cranston Stadium on Thursday. The West Warwick girls team nearly joined EWG in the semifinals, but lost to St. Raphael in overtime, 3-2.
In Division III girls soccer, Narragansett had no trouble advancing to the semifinals, destroying Johnston 8-0. The Mariners play Burrillville, which beat Moses Brown, Thursday at 12 p.m. at Gaudet Middle School in Middletown.
