Making it official by means of a press release issued last week, District 33 Senator and local business owner Lou Raptakis announced his intent to run for re-election this November.
A Democrat representing East Greenwich, Coventry and West Greenwich, Raptakis is the owner of Venus Pizza in Coventry and a longtime legislator.
He made the news in his most recent term in the state Senate for winning passage of a bill he sponsored to require criminals convicted of first- or second-degree murder to serve at least half of their sentence before being eligible for parole. Despite the measure stalling in the House, Raptakis has already announced plans to introduce the bill again next year and said he would work with House leadership to ensure its passage there.
In the most recent legislative session, Raptakis helped to lead the charge in the General Assembly to eliminate the Master Lever and also to block a payment of $12 million on the controversial 38 Studios bonds.
