NORTH KINGSTOWN—With the threat of closure hanging close, Wilson’s of Wickford was able to scrape together the $148,000 needed to pay for its fall inventory, among other necessities. Operator James Wilson was pleasantly taken aback by the community’s response in helping support the 70 year-old clothier.
“It is awesome and humbling, and we are very grateful,” said Wilson on Tuesday. “The community and the support was so strong and so inspiring. We probably had somewhere between 900 to 1000 people make contributions online and here in the store.”
“I don’t think I fully recognized the magnitude of it,” he added. “It is really kind of overwhelming.”
Two weeks prior, the local community was shocked into action as Wilson’s put up a plea on its website and Facebook page, directing the community to help by donating through a group fund campaign.
