COVENTRY— While the Missouri man was sentenced to 14 years in prison Tuesday for taking a developmentally disabled minor from Massachusetts to Rhode Island for illegal sexual activity, where they met in an online chat room, Coventry Police Chief Bryan Volpe talked about way parents can prevent cyber crimes, like this one, from happening.
“As parents, we all must be vigilant regarding our children’s online use on home PC’s, laptops and smart phones,” Volpe said.
The Superintendent of Coventry Public Schools, Michael Almedia plans on having another informational session in the near future on ways parents and children alike can prevent cyber crimes from happening. Scenarios similar to the way the Missouri man, Stephen Ardrey, met the 17-year-old girl in an online chat room could possibly be prevented by taking the necessary steps in protecting the users identity.
