COVENTRY — After representatives for the Coventry Board of Canvassers went before a judge in Rhode Island Supreme Court Tuesday morning asking for a special election to fill the District 5 seat on the town council, the court decided Tuesday afternoon that the board of canvassers is to hold a special election immediately.
The date has yet to be determined.
The issue began in March after many criticized the way Coventry Town Council President Gary Cote wrote an advertisement on the town’s website for the vacant town council position.
In the notice, he “asks that anyone in Council District Five who is not planning on running for the town council seat in November 2014 but would like to submit their name to fill that seat until the November election may submit their interest in person or in writing to the Coventry Town Clerk’s office.”
