EAST GREENWICH — One local business narrowly avoided falling into a financial trap, and the owner urges other establishments to be cautious about suspicious phone calls about utility payments.
The morning of Feb. 26 was like any other day for Defin Rainho. Working in the back of his small deli on Main Street, Simon Says Cafe, preparing treats while his employees greeted and served customers, it seemed like a typical start to a Wednesday.
Then Rainho, who has overseen the operations of Simon Says for a decade, got a phone call from a person claiming to be a supervisor from National Grid.
