NARRAGANSETT- Members of the Narragansett Town Council hesitantly approached the bleachers at Narragansett High School during a special work session with the school committee on Wednesday.
As a way to introduce the Narragansett Community Athletic Complex campaign (NCAC), School Committee President Tammy McNeiece invited the town council to tour the current conditions of the NHS bleachers, track, and field.
In a recent survey of Narragansett residents by Gale Associates, Inc., 67 percent of the respondents agreed that athletic fields in the town are either “insufficient” or only “marginally sufficient to meet community needs,” said McNeiece.
“Is it safe?” questioned town council member Doug McLaughlin as he looked down at the Narragansett High School bleachers.
“The one thing we really wanted to show you out here was the bleachers. If you’re comfortable if you can bear with me I would like you to walk down these stairs, if you’re not comfortable I understand but I really would like you to do that,” said McNeiece. “When you actually come here and walk down the bleachers with no railings, you can see that it is a tough trip.”
McNeiece said that the bleachers in the proposed athletic complex would double the current bleachers with a handicap accessible 1,000 person outdoor entertainment venue.
“When we had congressman Langevin here it was an embarrassment, there is nothing that was handicap accessible for him,” said McNeiece. “We had a huge track event that he wasn’t even able to view. It is very difficult for many people to come down these stairs, we even had some moms at the track meet that were pregnant that didn’t feel comfortable.”
Other concerns presented during the work session were that the track conditions are poor, unserviceable and pose serious risk to runners and the concession and rest room facilities are woefully inadequate. McNeiece said that the high school has not had a home track meet in over sixteen years due to the poor conditions of the track.
