More than 350 graduate as 78th class says good-bye
SOUTH KINGSTOWN – “Don’t change who you are, because that’s what matters most and that’s the type of diversity that can change the world,” said Coventry High’s 2013 valedictorian, Jennifer Haley.
“As young Americans, we sometimes feel entitled to awards, adventures and a rewarding life,” she said. “I hope each of us feels grateful for our happiness. It’s a culmination of all those who have helped us along the way to become who we are. All events that have brought us here have shaped who are and what we can achieve.”
Haley pointed out the many ways everyone has influenced the class of 2013.
“I recognize and appreciate how fortunate I am to have the chance to saving lives and give back when I go into the Coast Guard Academy,” she said.
The valedictorian also encouraged her peers to be the change they want to see in the world, no matter where life takes them.
Salutatorian Ashley Ginda recognized the journey she and her peers took to get them to that moment in the Ryan Center to receive their diplomas.
“As I look out into a sea of red and white, dressed alike to show our unity as a class, it is clear that our experiences through our high school years have helped us to grow into a class of diverse individuals and have prepared us to embark on a whole new phase of our lives,” she said.
For some, high school proved to be the best years of our school career, while for others, getting to the Ryan Center had its challenges. For many, the education we have been afforded has allowed us to explore our own strengths, identify our weaknesses, and discover that we have the potential to become more than we ever thought possible.”
Ginda left her peers with a last though of something talk show host Ellen Degeneres once said, “Find out who you are and be that person,” said Ginda. “That’s what your soul was put on this Earth to be. Find that truth, live that truth and everything else will come.”
