NARRAGANSETT - Public hearing opened at Tuesday evening’s town council meeting with members considering a request by Gilbane Corporation for text and mapping changes to the Narragansett Pier Urban Renewal Zoning District regulations.
Previously submitted to the planning board and recommended for approval as a housekeeping item, the changes affect four buildings in the village, designating each as multi-use.
Coming before the council as a result of procedural oversights in a 2006 agreement between the town and developers, Gilbane Corporation, the agreement to codify provisions directing the future development of the Pier Village site was not incorporated into the Land Use Plan.
Language and mapping changes were presented to the council by Town Planner Michael DeLuca.
“This is brought to you as a follow-up on an action taken here in 2006,” he said. “The ordinance is supposed to amend the land use designations for four specific buildings in the Urban Renewal Area known as the Gilbane site.”
Specific to building J that is on the corner of Caswell Street and Narragansett Avenue, the language allows for commercial and residential use of the units, with commercial allowance restricted to the first floor and residential allowance on the second and third floors.
Changes to buildings B, C and D included moving from commercial use to multi-use, with allowance for residential use on the upper levels.
Council members requested that the prior language be produced prior to any decision being made on the plan change.
