COVENTRY — Police just released the name of the woman whose body was found in the woods on Wednesday.
The woman was confirmed by police as Sherie A. Hughes, 45, of 21 Wesleyan Ave. She was found on Wednesday at 11:45 a.m. when passers-by happened upon the body in a wooded area, east of Sheltra Avenue. Police were contacted and upon arrival, confirmed that it was the body of a deceased female.
The Medical Examiner responded to the scene and took custody of the body. Although very little information has been released, police say that the body did not appear to have any obvious signs of trauma. An autopsy and toxicology report will be performed. Spokesperson Lt. John Shields was unsure of how long the confirmation will take.
“It’s under investigation and one of the big keys will be waiting for the official autopsy, which takes an incredible amount of time,” he said.
Shields stated that the area that the body was found was wooded, with the nearest house estimated to be between 500 to 1,000 yards away. With Oak Haven Elementary School, the Pawtuxet River and bike trail nearby, the area is often frequented by bikers, fishermen and walkers.
“It’s a short distance with people often cutting to and from—it’s not like it’s remote like the other end of [Coventry],” explained Shields.
More information will be reported as it becomes available.
