School contract talks hit a snag

Before they could even begin, contract talks between the School Committee and the East Greenwich Education Association, the NEARI-affiliated union representing the district's teachers, have hit a snag.

In a release put out Monday afternoon by the School Department, the administration and School Committee expressed disappointment in the union for declining their invitation to begin negotiations on a new collective bargaining agreement. The current agreement expires Aug. 31.

“In order to maintain that high level of performance, it is essential that East Greenwich schools continue to pursue a number of critical educational reforms. Implementing these planned reforms is crucial, so it was disappointing to hear from our teachers union (the East Greenwich Education Association/NEARI/NEA) that they have declined the East Greenwich School Department’s offer to open negotiations on a new collective bargaining agreement,” said the release.
