COVENTRY – On Friday morning, students at Father John V. Doyle School each contemplated what it would be like if their hair was made of donuts.
East Greenwich author Joy Feldman visited the school to read her book “Is Your Hair Made of Donuts?” to promote healthy eating in young children.
Feldman began the book about three years ago and stated that it will be available in bookstores in late February of 2012. Shortly after, in March, the book will be released during National Nutrition Month with the Boys and Girls Club in East Providence.
For now, Feldman explained that has been visiting schools and hospitals in Rhode Island free of charge to promote the message.
“I’m trying to teach kids that they are what they eat. What they put in their body builds their body, their hair, their skin, their organs,” said Feldman. “I think there’s a really big disconnect with how what you put in your body affects your health and your wellbeing.”
Feldman led the reading interactively, allowing the students to shout “ooey-gooey” when prompted. The story is about two siblings who are not allowed to eat junk food, in particular donuts, and is meant to show other children what happens what they do.
The full story can be found in the Kent County Daily Times.
