SOUTH KINGSTOWN—Michael Brooks, 50, pleaded no contest to four counts of first degree robbery for holding up and robbing four elderly women in towns across South County in August 2010. Brooks, whose last known address was 125 Knowlesway Extension, Narragansett, was brought before Superior Court Justice William Carnes and sentenced to 40 years in prison with 35 as a maximum to serve.
On August 29, 2010, Brooks held up Barbara Kogut, grabbing her by the throat, as she sat in her vehicle in the parking lot of Stop and Shop Supermarket in Narragansett. He ordered her to hand over her purse. On the same day, Brooks drove what the victims and witnesses observed at the time a maroon station-wagon to Dave’s Marketplace in East Greenwich and robbed another woman there. Brooks stuck a sharp object into the side of Kathleen Mackie and demanded her purse.
On August 31, 2010, Brooks attacked again at the Wal-Mart parking lot in North Kingstown. He pushed Terri Ormond to the ground as she was walking into the business and stole her purse. Ormond was treated for multiple head lacerations and broken ribs. Shortly thereafter, in the Dave’s Marketplace parking lot in North Kingstown, Brooks wrapped himself around Helen O’Neil and demanded her to give over her wallet before pushing her to the ground and leaving. O’Neil was not injured.
