COVENTRY — The Coventry football team began Saturday’s non-league contest against Pilgrim by playing their worst five minutes of football this season.
And then the Oakers, looking for their first win of the season, delivered 43 minutes of their most inspiring football in recent memory.
After committing two turnovers and giving up a 24-yard touchdown reception to Michael Mallozzi, the Oakers proceeded to run the ball down the Patriots’ throats for the remainder of the contest. Sophomore running back Stryker Blue rushed for 178 yards and two touchdowns and junior back Brian Grant had 113 yards and two touchdowns in a 38-8 victory Saturday afternoon.
“After every game, I feel like I can play another game,” said the diminutive Blue, who also punted the ball well and caught a fourth-down pass for a first down in the red zone. “We just brought the same intensity from the Westerly game to this one.”
“I just played as hard as I could,” said Grant. “My job is to go as hard as I can and not go down easy. We fought for that first touchdown and everything went from there. We really wanted it. It’s great to get over that hump and get a win.”
