NARRAGANSETT–An historic landmark is back in action after over a decade of sitting idle.
After some major renovations, The Grinnell Inn, is open to the public as a bed and breakfast with a restaurant called Riptides on the first floor. The inn now features seven distinctive rooms, each with its own Narragansett beach theme like Sand Hill Cove, Bonnet Shores and Scaroborough. Each room has a private bathroom and brand new hardwood floors.
“We took over in March and brought in all the decorations and furnishings,” said Selena Lavoie, who runs the Grinnell Inn and Riptides Restaurant located at 83 Narragansett Avenue with her husband Bob. “We’re going to be open year round and we’re happy to be in business. We’ve been looking at this place for the past five years.”
The Lavoies, residents of Narragansett for over 16 years, have a background in the food industry. They owned and operated a bakery called Mad Hatters in Newport prior to taking over the inn.
Riptides should be a welcome place for tourists, locals and URI students. In the 1990s, when the restaurant was called Peppers, it was a very popular place to eat a casual meal and catch up with your friends and neighbors. Riptides still has that casual vibe although the renovations give it a cleaner, more open space.
Lunch and dinner items include sandwiches, soups, salads, burgers, wraps, fresh fruit, clamcakes and chowder and more. It’s all reasonably priced–most of the items on the menu are under $10. And while they don’t have a liquor license, the restaurant is BYOB and there are plenty of non-alcoholic beverages on the menu including iced tea, lemonade and a variety of smoothies and frozen concoctions.
