NARRAGANSETT–The weather did indeed cooperate with the students from Roger Williams University on Sunday afternoon. Traveling in two school buses, their goal on this wind swept, yet sunny day was to clean up Narragansett Town Beach.
A group of 50 students gathered at the South Beach Pavilion in Narragansett with trash bags and gloves, ready to help clean the beach as Earth Day approaches on this Friday, April 22.
“At Roger Williams our campus is beautiful and we take advantage of this state we live in,” said Mary Concannon, a Communications student at RWU. “We need to make sure we’re giving back and not just enjoying the view.”
Roger Williams University has teamed up with the clothing brand Nautica and the non-profit organization Oceana in order to provide students the opportunity to become more aware of the environment. The event, held bi-annually, has been orchestrated in large part by the efforts of Mary Kate Burns, a former intern at Nautica and Communications Major at RWU.
“One of our cores values [at RWU] is sustainability,” said Burns. “We cleaned up North Kingstown Beach in October and it is nice to see that we can make an impact.”
