WESTERLY – Westerly Area Youth Lacrosse (WAYL) recently received two grants that will help the area's new non-profit lacrosse organization with funding and equipment for its upcoming 2011 Spring season.
The organization was given a cash grant from the Scott A. Shemenski Memorial Foundation and an equipment package from US Lacrosse, the national governing body of lacrosse.
The US Lacrosse equipment grant consisted of a boys' package of 20 helmets and a goalie helmet; the girls' package consisted of 20 pairs of protective eyewear and one goalie helmet. Equipment will be loaned to the athletes during the 2011 lacrosse season on a first come basis.
"On behalf of US Lacrosse, I would like to congratulate you on your selection as a 2010 US Lacrosse recipient," stated Joshua W. Christian, managing director of sport development for US Lacrosse.
The Scott A. Shemenski Memorial Foundation provided a $2,500 grant to be used to fund the new program, including providing financial scholarships to allow disadvantage youths to play the sport. The foundation was established in December 2002 in honor of Scott A. Shemenski, a lacrosse player, coach and tireless worker for the development of youth lacrosse in Rhode Island.
Shemenski founded Rhode Island's first official youth lacrosse league in the early 1990's, while also establishing a club team for adults. The focus of the Foundation is to help stimulate the growth of Rhode Island lacrosse by monetarily assisting in the creation of new programs.
Adam Kaufman, WAYL President, said, "We have more than 100 youth registered for our first season, so these grants will go a long way in providing a base of support for future growth of our program."
The WAYL is committed to teaching the young boys and girls, grades 1-8 about the sport and helping them develop the skills necessary to play competitively. Westerly High School has a girls' varsity lacrosse team and a boys' lacrosse club.
Westerly Area Youth Lacrosse is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide boys and girls in the Westerly area (Westerly, Charlestown, Richmond, Hopkinton, and Ashaway, RI.) the opportunity to explore the excitement of lacrosse in a safe and caring environment where good sportsmanship, respect for the game and respect for fellow athletes, opponents, coaches and officials is practiced at all times.
