SOUTH KINGSTOWN – A few pets will be getting a new home soon as the South Kingstown Animal Shelter nears its completion of its new facility set to open in the late spring.
“It's something we've been working on for a number of years and we were finally able to work things out with the town,” West Peck, assistance manager of the shelter said. “It was important to us to to build on site. We like the spot where we are. It's not closely crowded around.”
The Town Council in July 2009 authorized an award of contract to High Tech Construction, Inc. for the construction of the new Animal Shelter Facility at a cost of $1,165,198.
Peck said the shelter was mainly able to fund the new facility from private donations despite the economy. A large contribution to the shelter was the donation by one female resident, who donated her house.
Peck said the new shelter is a marked improvement from the current one and is actually designed to be an animal shelter, but just a building where they made into one.
