While East Greenwich schools could not boast increases across the board, the October 2010 New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP) test scores continue to rank local students among the state’s best.
In proficiency test results in reading, math and writing for students in Grades 3 through 8 and 11, released last week by the state Department of Education, East Greenwich consistently performed well above the state average, even when scores dropped from last year’s figures.
“There’s some encouraging progress, but there are still things we need to work on,” said school Superintendent Victor Mercurio.
While pleased with general gains in math, Mercurio is hoping to see more consistent progress across the board.
“We look at the scores holistically, then by grade, then by cohort,” he said.
Mercurio said he would analyze the results further and give the School Committee a detailed report next month.
The report, compiled by state Education Commissioner Deborah Gist, recognized East Greenwich as one of only seven school districts in which students achieved at the elementary, middle and high school levels.
In overall reading proficiency at all grade levels, East Greenwich ranked fourth in the state, including public and charter schools (second behind only Barrington among public school districts) with 90 percent reaching proficiency, 17 points above the state average and level with last year’s performance. The district’s math score dropped one point to 81, but still tied for fifth overall and third among public schools behind Barrington and Jamestown. That score was 26 points above the state average.
In the new writing test, the town scored better at each grade level.
Local elementary schools scored 74, 15 above the state average, trailing only Burrillville and Smithfield. At the middle school level, East Greenwich tied Smithfield at the top with 89, 27 points above average. East Greenwich High stood alone at the top at 80, 29 points higher than the average high school performance.
At individual elementary schools, Meadowbrook took a tumble in both reading (98 in 2009 to 86) and math (95 to 85), while Frenchtown took smaller hits in reading (96 to 90) and math (92 to 88). Hanaford rose four points in reading, to 92, and dropped one in math, to 82. Eldredge remained at 86 in reading and rose four points in math to 87.
In writing, a test given to fifth-graders, Hanaford scored a strong 83, 24 points above the state average, with Eldredge scoring 65.
Cole showed little change from ’09, with reading dropping one point to 91 and math up one to 81. Its writing scored of 89 was 27 points above average.
The high school reading and writing scores dropped slightly, reading one point to 91 and math three to 68. Its writing score of 80 was 29 above the state average.
