Billy Baron - son of URI men's basketball coach Jim - made his first statements to the media since announcing he was transferring from Virginia to URI.
Here are a few of his comments.
(On the decision)
-It’s good to be back home. I missed my family, I missed being home. Just being able to play for my father, you know. Virginia was great, a lot of great opportunities coming out of there, great people there, great coaching staff. Just the fact of coming home, you only have one of them.
(On being at UVA)
-I got to go to a great place. I met so many great people. I got to go to a great school and experience all those things and experience what it’s like to play basketball not for my father and on the ACC level.
(Responded when asked if Jim ever had to tell him he was speaking as a father and not a coach and if he ever said if Billy wanted to come back, he'd have a place at URI)
-He didn’t say that because he believed in me. I think it was more of a given. It was something that didn’t have to be said because he knew. I committed here earlier and he knew I wanted to play here, but I wanted to experience that opportunity.
