NARRAGANSETT—Within the past week there have been several incidents within southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island where recreational or small fishing vessels sunk at their pier or mooring due to excess weight from snow and ice.
Two vessels are the Nelo 2 and the Victoria Elizabeth, boats which sank on Friday and Monday in Galilee. The Coast Guard will be releasing additional information about each sinking after further investigation.
As winter storms continue, more vessels may be at risk, wrote Verne Gifford in a press release from the United States Coast Guard.
“Harbormasters, marina owners and operators, and owners of recreational or small fishing vessels still in the water may want to examine their respective boats for excess snow and ice and, if safe to do so, remove the snow and ice from the boats to the extent possible, and/or remove the boat(s) from the water altogether,” Gifford wrote.
