This week, Westerly Community Credit Union distributed checks from the 27th Annual WCCU Holiday Basketball Tournament to the four participating high schools: Chariho, Exeter-West Greenwich, Stonington and Westerly.
The tournament was held on Dec 27, 28, 29 and 30, and raised money for four participating schools’ sports boosters.
‘WCCU has always been a very community-oriented institution,’ stated Steve White, WCCU President & CEO. ‘We couldn’t be happier being the sole sponsor of this event for the past 27 years and raising money to help our communities’ young adults.’
The Credit Union pays for all expenses and 100% of the entry fees from the tournament are divided be-tween the Sports Boosters of Chariho, Exeter-West Greenwich, Stonington, and Westerly High School. 2010’s tournament raised $12,166.23!!! Each school received a check in the amount of $3,041.56!
This popular event has now raised over $155,191.80 for sports boosters at local participating high schools since the 1st Tournament took place in 1984.
In addition to the check each school received, each player and coach received a long sleeved t-shirt and a drawstring backpack as a memento from this year’s tournament. Also, as an added bonus this year, the players who earned the All Tourney, MVP and Sportsmanship awards received two tickets to the URI Big Chill Alumni Weekend Men’s Basketball Game on Saturday January 22, 2011 which was sponsored by WCCU.
