RICHMOND – If you're looking for something to do this coming February, you should probably head on over to the Richmond Community Center.
Located above the Richmond Police Station on Main Street, the center has a full month of activities planned for next month. The Richmond Social Activities Ad Hoc Committee deserves much of the thanks for this initiative, as does Town Administrator Steve Sette.
The administrator has helped the committee ever since they got their start back late last year as a means of picking up where the disbanded Richmond Senior Citizens Association left off.
One of the committee's top priorities was bringing back the weekly bingo games, which they recently re-instituted with bingo being held every Tuesday at 6 p.m. With doors opening at 4:30 p.m., the event includes progressive jackpot games, early bird, free quickie games, and door prizes. Refreshments are also offered.
The group asked the council at its meeting last Tuesday, Jan. 18 to approve a $1,500 transfer of funds that would help with ensuring more activities can be held. It was no surprise that the council, which has supported this effort since it began, approved the transfer.
With these additional funds, the group will be able to cover any payments to the various instructors above the fee charged for the class, Sette explained. “For example, if we have an exercise class that costs $30 per hour for the instructor and we collect a fee of $3 per participant and only 6 take the class, we would pay the additional $12 from this fund,” he said.
The February activities calendar features daily coffee from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. On Mondays, except for Feb. 21, there are quilting and tai chi classes at 9 a.m. with cardio class held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays feature art class at 9 a.m. and crafts at 1 p.m. while Wednesdays offer “sit get fit” at 9 a.m. and cribbage at 1:30 p.m.
On Thursday, there is a knitting class at 9 a.m. with another cardio session from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Fridays offer more “sit get fit” classes at 9 a.m. and additional yoga at 10:30 a.m.
Visiting Nurses will come to the center on Thursday, Feb. 17 at 10 a.m. along with a University of Rhode Island outreach program at 2:30 p.m.
