North Kingstown – January 10, 2011 – The active students of North Kingstown High School are using civics class to bring change.
A junior at NKHS, Matt Buresh, is trying to change a school policy added this year. He started this movement as his civics project. He is a student in a civics class taught by the decorated teacher Mr. Lawrence Verria.
The rule Buresh wishes to eliminate is the newly added restriction on students during lunch.
Once a student enters the cafeteria during their 30 minute lunch period, they cannot leave the cafeteria without a signed pass. Students used to be able to leave the cafeteria whenever they pleased during lunch.
Using surveys and petitions and contacting administration, Buresh is trying to raise awareness and bring change.
He is presenting his work in the NKHS Civics Showcase on Wednesday, January 12, at 7:00 pm.
*Please note, if school at NKHS is canceled on Wednesday due to expected snowfall, the showcase will be rescheduled.
