WEST GREENWICH - The Exeter West Greenwich School Committee voted to approve the Hockey Co-Op team last Tuesday night, joining EWG High School and West Warwick High School as a team.
With the West Warwick school committee also approving the team, the EWG committee voted to approve with Member Robert Bollengier dissenting. Bollengier pointed out that the approved language from the West Warwick school committee doesn’t definitively state that the EWG school district will have no financial responsibility for the co-op team.
Superintendent Thomas Geismar and the school committee honored the girls’ soccer team for winning the state championship. Along with Coach Kevin Fraser, Geismar and Chairperson Susan DeSack presented each player with an award of recognition and a gift card.
Geismar and the committee also honored the departing school committee members, marking Tuesday as their last meeting. Chairperson DeSack, Member Bollengier and Member Mary Walsh were honored with awards of recognition. Geismar, Director of Administration Robert Ross, and the other committee members took some time to share memories and show appreciation for the departing members.
“Being chairperson is the toughest job,” Geismar said in regard to Desack. “During her six years as chair, no matter how busy, [DeSack] always made time to talk school issues and to offer guidance.”
He also pointed out the DeSack took part in many projects in the district over her eight years as a member, including the administration building and the new track.
Of Member Walsh, Geismar point out the she is “tenacious when standing up for her beliefs…when she speaks you better listen.”
Geismar also spoke of Bollengier’s commitment to the district; “there was no committee he was not willing to work on. He has a great attitude.”
The last school committee meeting of the year will be Tuesday, December 7, at 6 pm.
