PEACE DALE–The kindergarten classes at Peace Dale Elementary School learned the importance of giving when they marched over to the Welcome House of South County Monday morning, Nov. 22 to give the homeless shelter gift baskets they collected.
"It's nice to teach the kids so young about the importance of giving and being part of the community," Valerie don Francesco, assistant director at Welcome House said.
Four kindergarten classes, which included 80 students began collecting food and toiletries for the Welcome House at 8 North Road on Nov. 1 when teacher Stacey Girard said she wanted to teach the children what it is to give back. The elementary students donated two food baskets and one paper goods basket.
"It is a part of teaching the children about the meaning of Thanksgiving and the whole meaning of giving. Every child brought something in. I think it's meaningful to them. They know that some people don't have everything they do," Girard said.
