WEST GREENWICH—For years, fans, parents and athletes in Exeter-West Greenwich High School have debated whether or not there’s enough interest in the town to put together a hockey program.
Thursday night, they got their answer.
Thanks to an impressive fundraising effort that saw parents, players and fans raise $9,492 of the required $11,000 … in a matter of seven days … the EWG School Committee unanimously approved a proposal to create a co-op hockey program between the towns of Exeter-West Greenwich and West Warwick and the agreement, which is set to last for two years, means there will officially be a hockey team for Scarlet Knight athletes beginning this winter.
“I’m pleased for the kids,” EWG Athletic Director Tim Daft said Thursday at the conclusion of a special school committee meeting meant to finalize the town’s approval of the team. “They worked hard and they’re going to do what it takes to raise the money and you can see that they’re serious, just from the turnout here.”
