NARRAGANSETT – Local Sauderstown resident Jacqueline Gannon, 22, is heading to Guinea in West Africa as part of the Peace Corps.
Upon her departure on Jan. 13, Gannon will begin her training as a health educator Peace Corps volunteer. After graduation from volunteer training in March, Gannon will be working to raise awareness and increase prevention of HIV and AIDS and malaria, and to promote nutrition, vaccinations and hygiene.
While studying biology at Western New England College in Springfield, Mass., Gannon had decided to study abroad in South Africa in spring 2009. Working with the South African community, her experience motivated her to join the Peace Corps.
“Ever since I came back I wanted to go back to Africa. [Studying abroad] was a short time. I was looking for an opportunity to go back and continue the work I'd done,” Gannon said.
