July 18, 2012

Narragansett's new Parks and Recreation Director Steven Wright

NARRAGANSETT—On Monday evening, Interim Parks and Recreation Director Steven Wright was approved by the Town Council to take up the position permanently. He had been filling in since February 2011, at which time he was serving as Beach Superintendent.

“I never really looked for [the position], but the opportunity is there,” said Wright. “I love what I do and the community is a fit.”

Wright has been praised by town staff, the Council, and residents for the work he has done in organizing the operations at the Town Beach, as well as addressing important issues facing the Parks and Recreation Department, including roof improvements at the former Camp Jori site and continuing implementation of an adopt-a-bench program in the Pier area, among other events and initiatives.

“I have read Steve’s resume, which is outstanding,” said Town Councilwoman Susan Cicilline-Buonanno. “Everywhere across the town people are so happy with his work, from the beach to the parks, and I think this is absolutely the right thing to do.”

A number of residents also spoke about Wright’s performance within the Parks and Recreation Department, noting that he has demonstrated professionalism and effective communication.

“I have worked with Steve 25 years at DEM, and this is a very wise decision by the Town Council and Town Manager,” said co-worker George Bagley. “We will work as hard as we can for him.”
