Arson was determined to be the cause of a fire on July 8 at Willow Dell Beach Club, above. Last weekend another incident occured as the club was vandalized.

MATUNUCK – After part of the Willow Dell Beach Club was set on fire in an arson incident on Friday, July 8, the beach club was also vandalized a week later this past Saturday.

Early morning at 9:19 on Saturday, July 16, a Willow Dell Beach Club board member reported to police that someone had entered the club the previous night and broke numerous fluorescent lighting tubes and took an ash pail and dumped the contents onto the lawn on the north side of the building.
Earlier last week South Kingstown Police, the Union Fire District and the State Fire Marshall responded to the beach club on Cards Pond Road in Matunuck, where a fire caused extensive damage to the western portion of the beach club, running between 60 to 100 feet. No one was injured in the fire.

After evidence found at the scene, including flammable liquid throughout the building, the State Fire Marshall’s Office ruled the fire arson in the second degree, setting fire to an unoccupied building.

Although the two incidents were close in time, Detective Sergeant Joel Ewing-Chow stated that police do not know if there is a connection between the arson and the vandalism.

“We don’t know if there’s connection. Whether or not they’re related, I don’t know. There are so many people that hang out at [Willow Dell] and it’s not a gated complex,” Ewing-Chow said.
