West Warwick schools make good from bad

May 11, 2012

WEST WARWICK — With all the proposed program cuts throughout the West Warwick School District, various high school administrators took the opportunity to “do more with less” and create the International Business and Technology Academy.

Superintendent Ken Sheehan explained that due to the program cuts, the Finance Academy at West Warwick High School will no longer be offered.

Because of this, high school principal, Karen Tarasevich, and Department Chair for the Business Department, Donna Clemence, designed a new program for the 51 students who had applied to the former Finance Academy.

“With this program we will be able to take care of all of our own kids and be able to provide programming and skills necessary for all of those kids and parents to be satisfied in regards to what we have done at West Warwick High School,” said Sheehan. “And it is at no additional cost to the taxpayer.”

He explained that the developing program within the Business Department will offer interdisciplinary courses regarding history, foreign language and business.

“Despite the many obvious financial challenges we face and the very difficult decisions we’ve had to make over the past several months, our teaching staff and all our support staff has worked really hard continuing to develop programs that support our kids,” she said.

She said that many teachers and administrators have been designing and redesigning programs to give the students the best education with the resources available.

With the Finance Academy disappearing, Tarasevich explained that she and her staff were looking for a way to prepare the students to be technology ready and financially ready for the global economy.

Great! Perhaps we should consider putting these students in charge of the West Warwick Pension Committee. They can't possibly do a worse job than what we have now, or have done in the past, when we had a professional 'Whiz Bang Financier' in charge.
