West Greenwich tabs next police chief

July 17, 2012

After 23 years serving West Warwick, Richard Ramsay is West Greenwich's new police chief.

WEST WARWICK — Major Richard Ramsay of the West Warwick Police Department has accepted a job offer as the new Police Chief of West Greenwich as he focuses on the advancement of his career.

Maj. Ramsay, who’s been with West Warwick for 23 years, began his career as an officer and worked his way up to the second highest position in the department.

“I love my job as a Major in charge of the patrol division, but being a Chief is a great opportunity,” he said. “When the application opened up I talked to my family and I thought it would be a good move professionally.”

Maj. Ramsay was chosen out of 37 applicants and will be replacing Ronald Lepre, who retired as Police Chief last year.

Becoming the Chief of Police for West Greenwich will be a change for Ramsay.

The town of West Warwick is eight and a half square miles with a population of 29,074. The Police department in town houses 52 officers.

The town of West Greenwich however, is 51 square miles with a population of 6,784 and only houses 10 police officers.

“I think it’s going to be a challenge,” he said. “But it’ll be a challenge I welcome. It’ll be a learning curve and I’m looking forward to it. West Greenwich is a beautiful community and they have a great reputation and police department,” he said.

Maj. Ramsay said he and his family will continue to live in West Warwick for the time being while he begins this new opportunity.

His last official day with the police department is July 31 and he will begin in West Greenwich on August 6.

He will be sworn in during the July 11 West Greenwich Town Council meeting.

“I love being a police officer in West Warwick, it’s not that I didn’t want to work here,” Maj. Ramsay said. “I’ll miss the officers and the community but this was a career opportunity and I didn’t want to pass that up, I was lucky enough to be chosen.”
