Girl Scouts from East Greenwich Troop 1380 and North Kingstown Troop 111 recently held a âdress down dayâ at Our Lady of Mercy School, East Greenwich, to benefit Project Undercover. Over 9,000 pieces of socks, underwear and diapers were collected and donated to the West Bay Community Action program in Warwick.
Project Undercover is a 501(c) 3 organization that raises funds and awareness to provide new diapers, underwear and socks for children living in poverty in Rhode Island. Over 40,000 children live under the Federal Poverty level in Rhode Island, and diapers, socks and underwear are a luxury for many of these kids.
Since these items cannot be handed down like other articles of clothing and they are not covered by safety net programs such as food stamps or WIC, undergarments remain on the top of many familiesâ most wanted list of items. More information can be found at www.projectundercover.org.
GSRI is one of more than 150 Girl Scout councils in the United States, and includes girls from all over Rhode Island, and reaches into parts of Connecticut and Massachusetts.
In 2009, GSRI served nearly 12,000 girls and 3,400 adults. In partnership with committed adults, Girls Scouts develop qualities that will serve them throughout their lives like strong values, a social conscience, and conviction about their own potential and self-worth. GSRI has collected over five million items for Project Undercover throughout their 15 year partnership.
