NEWPORTâ The playoff race heated up last Friday night in the Pell Bridge series season finale between the Ocean State Waves and the Newport Gulls in the New England Collegiate Baseball League, with the Waves coming away on top, 11-4, ending the Gullsâ six-game winning streak in the process.
In the sixth matchup of the summer between the squads, the Wavesâ continued their dominance against the Gullsâ by winning the series, 4-2. The Wavesâ took two out of the three games on the road at Cardines Field in Newport during the regular season. Last year, in the Wavesâ inaugural season, it was the opposite, with Newport winning the head-to-head series by the same score.
On July 22, Gullsâ pitcher Mike Mancuso faced the Wavesâ in 2.2 innings of relief to pick up the, 8-6, win but this time around he went four innings, surrendering three runs and was hit with the loss. As injuries concerns have troubled the southpaw throughout this summer, his stuff just didnât look the same on Friday night.
âTo me I thought there was something wrong with him, I thought he was kind of nursing some sort of injury because it just didnât look like the ball was coming out his hand the same,â said Waveâs Manager Eric Cirella.
