WAKEFIELD â Although bookstore locals will lament the loss of Waldenbooks, which will close Jan. 22 after 31 years of service at the Wakefield Mall, they can breathe a sigh of relief as Wakefield Books will likely take its place.
Waldenbooks began its closing store sale after its employees were notified of the closing. Borders, the company that owns Waldenbooks, did not renew the storeâs lease at the mall.
As the bookstore, known for its customer-friendly employees, featured huge sales just before the holidays, some customers were saddened by the news of its closing.
âIâm sad about the closing. We donât have a bookstore in South County. I come here a lot for gifts,â C.J. Tudino, a Narragansett resident, said.
Although bookstore shoppers can travel north to visit the Borders Bookstore in Garden City Shopping Center in Cranston, some had liked the convenience of the nearby Waldenbooks.
âIâm devastated. The people are very nice. They always give great suggestions on what to buy. I never go to Cranston. This is perfect,â Freddie Brewster, a Wakefield resident, said.
