Volunteers angry with FNKAS’ mission change

July 17, 2014

NORTH KINGSTOWN—A number of volunteers are angry with the leadership for the Friends of North Kingstown Animal Shelter (FNKAS), who have recently changed their name and mission statement. The non-profit, now called ‘the Friends of Animals in Need (FAN),’ will serve ‘statewide demands’ for assisting animal shelters financially across the state.
“Part of our mission has always been to help companion animals, whose owners need financial assistance for emergency medical care,” read a June 1 letter signed by FAN president Barbara Szepatowski. “With Rhode Island’s economy being as depressed as it is, we have been receiving numerous requests from throughout the state and believe this is something we can no longer ignore.”
“The time has come to expand our reach throughout Rhode Island and provide assistance to as many animals as we can,” it continued.
