Stabbing incident rocks Charlestown |

Police recovered a six to eight inch knife from a stabbing that took place on Wednesday July 18 in Charlestown at 50 Pasture Lane. District Court Judge Michael Higgins issued a search warrant last week for a residence in Charlestown and police found and confiscated the knife.
“It’s a quiet family neighborhood,” explained Sgt. Patrick McMahon, who called the incident “unusual.”
At approximately 6 p.m. last Wednesday, concerned parents called the Charlestown Police Department to report the incident at the home of Steven and Beth Wallander at 50 Pasture Lane, Charlestown from earlier that morning. The parents said their child told them two youths were stabbed during a fight outside the residence.
Between 1:30 and 2:30 a.m. on July 18, approximately ten, male and female teenagers from the Charlestown-Richmond-Hopkinton area were camping out for the night in the side yard at 50 Pasture Lane, when approximately ten additional teenagers came up the driveway. The students parked down the street, walked through the woods, and “sprung out on them” explained McMahon, who thought the incident took less than five minutes.
According to McMahon, there are two groups of Chariho students who are at odds and the fight was precipitated by trash talking, and antagonizing phone calls and text messages. And around 2:00 a.m. the group of ten arrived ready to fight.
A fight ensued and two teenagers were wounded with the knife. Bryan S. Bailey, 17 of Charlestown received a slash on his wrist that required 12 stitches. One of his friends drove him to Westerly Hospital, where he convinced personnel he cut himself on a fence, said McMahon. For this reason, the hospital did not notify the police.
The 15-year-old male from Hope Valley had six puncture wounds in his shoulder and upper torso. His mother took him to South County Hospital the following day and his wounds had already started to develop infections, explained McMahon.
Five individuals have been charged and all five were in the attacking party, according to McMahon.
Chariho School Superintendent Barry Ricci found the whole incident embarrassing. “I am embarassed that students from Chariho High School would conduct themselves in this way to solve a problem. It’s not what I would have expected with students from this school,” he said.
The students were charged as follows:
Disorderly conduct – fighting and Assault and battery
Bryan Bailey, 17, of 18 Niantic Highway, Charlestown
Kevin M. Campopiano, 17, of Richmond
Disorderly conduct-fighting
15-year-old juvenile male from Hope Valley
16-year-old juvenile male from Ashaway
Disorderly conduct-fighting and Felony assault
Steven K. Greene, 17, Charlestown
The three adults are scheduled for arraignment on Thursday Aug. 2 at 9 a.m. in the Fourth District Court of Washington County.
The two juveniles will be adjudicated by the Juvenile Prosecution Office.
The investigation is mostly complete, said McMahon on Monday, though the police have a couple more statements to take.
