SK Chamber starts new event at balloon festival
Thursday, 02 July 2009
Golf Ball Drop has plenty of cash prizes

By MICHAEL SOUZA

WAKEFIELD – In less than three weeks, our area will witness the first “Golf Ball Drop” held in Rhode Island.
The new event is sponsored by the South Kingstown Chamber of Commerce and is scheduled for Sunday, July 19th as part of the 31st Annual Hot Air Balloon Festival weekend in Kingston.
The prizes are equally as exciting.
Chamber Executive Director Joe Iacoi and his staff have been organizing the event since April and the chamber office has been selling golf ball certificates seven days a week.  The excitement is building.
“Our goal of selling 5000 golf balls is within reach” Iacoi said from his chamber desk last Friday.
The event consists of dropping numbered balls from a crane bucket.  The balls landing closest to – or in – the golf holes set up for the occasion are the winners.  In that manner, it works in a similar fashion as a popular “duck race” event.
“Our cash prizes are a big hit.  The winner gets $1500 in cash, followed by four winners receiving $500.  This year’s prize set-up is making our sales at all our 15 outlets very popular item these days,” he said.
The chamber board has been having fun approaching their customers, friends and family to make this raffle a success, and more importantly, to continue the tourism activities of the ever-growing South Kingstown Chamber of Commerce.
“They are committed to selling and supporting this new signature event” Iacoi said.
Iacoi also thanked eight seniors at the South Kingstown High School that helped number the 5000 golf balls last week at the chamber office.  “I would like to personally thank Matt Rexrod, Toby Fontaine, Sarah Long, Mary-Kate Eaton, Kathleen Kamerzel, Meg Kenyon, Nick Finan and Libby Lazar for their support and efforts to get these details accomplished for this exciting event,” he said.
He recommends buying your golf ball early as sales are going well prior to the event. If your business or group would like to help sell golf balls, they can call the chamber office at 783-2801.
