-We are not sure why the Charlestown Town Council weighed in on the Bill Felkner debate – don’t they have their own town business they should be discussing? It’s one thing to have an opinion, but what is the point when you don’t have any say in the matter? -Our headline last week on this said: It’s official, Felkner is taking his case to court. After reading in the statewide newspaper about how Felkner is suing Rhode Island College over his social work degree, we can only hope he wants to be on the school board and the Hopkinton Town Council for the right reasons – and not simply for more hits on his blog. -There is a lot of the spirit of the season going around. Celia Colon and her team at Michael’s Shell demonstrate that spirit every year when they raise money and purchase toys for the area needy (article in last week’s paper). These toys will be distributed at Santa’s Workshop in conjunction with the Food Pantry on Dec. 20. -Likewise, another local resident took it upon herself to spread a little joy this Christmas season. An 8-year-old girl solicited the help of her third grade class at Hope Valley Elementary and her brother’s pre-school at the Arcadia YMCA to make cards for folks who typically receive nothing around the holidays. Now that’s heartwarming. Read about it in next week’s Times. -We like the fact that the teachers’ contract negotiations were the topic of a recent public hearing. We also like the idea of bringing teacher’s health care payments and salary increases more in line with those in the private sector. It’s about time. -Phasing out cesspools in any town is the right thing to do, but it comes at a pretty high cost. That is the issue confronting Charlestown residents where cesspools must be removed by May 2009. In these tough economic times, how will residents pay for a new septic system or a more expensive denitrification system? There’s not much money out there in the way of grants and loan money, which has to be paid back anyway. We sympathize with residents on this issue and hope Charlestown can come up with some creative ways to |
