BY ABBY FOX East Greenwich’s newly established farmers’ market is concluding its first season, after running smoothly for the past six weeks, every Monday afternoon at the top of Academy Field. The market attracted about a dozen vendors.
“It’s been a great success; we’ve gotten nothing but positive feedback,” said Tracie Truesdell, wife of Doug Truesdell, who as a member of the planning board, set it up, with the help of Erik Eacker, of Ledge Ends Produce. “People seem to enjoy the day and the time; they seem to enjoy the different varieties of things we have.” The shady location, overlooking Academy Field “is really quaint, a perfect little New England spot,” she said. “It’s a great walkers’ market, for people in the neighborhood to be able to walk to, it has been nice.” As to the timing, “I was apprehensive about Mondays but so far, everyone’s felt like it was a great way to start their week. 3 to 6 is a great time, because you get stay-at-home moms and people coming home from work.” Adding to the charm is St. Luke’s tolling a bell at 3 p.m., to open the market. The event works as well for farmers and is does for the residents, she said. “There aren’t that many Monday markets and the farmers really like to unload their stuff; they don’t want any of it to go to waste.” Next year, “I want to do more events, a tomato tasting or an oyster tasting,” she said “Events would be really fun.” Truesdell said, “We have to give huge credit to Eric Eacker. He really helped us organize this.” |
