- We learned that the questions regarding ownership of the land for the Depot Square Park have been resolved. This is good news for the area as this park will enhance a sense of community by highlighting the history of Hope Valley.
- We had word this week from one of our own that they didn’t know when the election was because they didn’t vote. Yikes. We’ll be there covering the election next Tuesday November 4 and we expect all able bodied voters to be out there too. Locally, there is a lot riding on this election – town charter questions, town charters, town councils, school board members, and of course the school bond. See the list of local questions and candidates on page 2-A. At the local level, your vote, and we can’t stress this enough, really matters. We’ll see you at the polls.
- Nationally, there is also a lot riding on the election – though in Rhode Island we are sure that Obama will win by a large majority.
- The purchase of the development rights at Tuckahoe Turf Farm has been in the works for a while and the done deal is good news for the Chariho area. Almost 500 acres will be preserved as farmland into perpetuity. That vista off Switch Road will be enjoyed for generations to come.
- We’re glad to see area police and fire coming together for the emergency drill at the Chariho High School. We can only hope that if such a scenario does happen, it goes as smoothly as the controlled drill.
- The turf battle over who gets to argue the Indian trust case before the Supreme Court hasn’t gotten resolved. At this point, we vote for a compromise, working together, and splitting the time. Two heads could very well be better than one.
- This time next week there will be new town councils, a school bond that has passed or died, a new school board, possibly a new charter in Richmond, and charter changes in Charlestown. Change is coming and in these uncertain economic times, the focus will certainly be doing more with less. Eerily, the anniversary of the stock market crash of 1929 was this week.
