Call 1-800-SNITCH to report substance abuse
Thursday, 04 September 2008

Though we applaud the pro-active approach, we are having mixed feelings about the new substance abuse tip line at Chariho High School.

The line is part of a community-wide initiative to prevent substance and alcohol abuse, both in the school and in the Chariho area. The Chariho School District, local police departments, and Tri-town task force are all on board in this effort to reduce the incidence of substance abuse.

O.K. that’s a fine and lofty goal – cracking down on substance abuse -- but call 401-315-2850 to report such abuse? The number might as well be 1-800-SNITCH.

Now we don’t disagree with cracking down on alcohol and drug use but a snitch line seems to be, well, crossing the line.

We believe there has to be some room for personal responsibility in the mix. A tip line just doesn’t send the right message for a community-wide effort.   Go tattle on your neighbors or your fellow students. How about something more upfront?

And though we hate to be skeptical, even cynical, we think students and community members might just use the snitch line for the wrong reasons – revenge, jealousy, or the plain and simple desire to get someone in trouble.

But then again if the tip line saves a life or prevents one teen from driving drunk, it may be worth it.

Still, the tattle part doesn’t sit well with us. How about if you notice a problem with substance abuse among your peers or in your town, you step up to the plate, get involved and speak up like a concerned neighbor.  Or better yet, take that someone to the help services they need.

Yes, by all means get involved if you have knowledge of abuse or a dangerous situation but a tip line just seems too cowardly.
