When the world's most popular social networking site, Facebook, debuted in 2003, things were different. It started out small as it was open to a select group of colleges and universities. It grew quickly, though, and expanded to more colleges as months passed. And, soon enough, it was open to community colleges, then high schools, and, finally, every person with an Internet connection.
This quick expansion was, of course, welcome by most at first. There were few better means of reconnecting with lost friends and family. Also, it served as a useful tool for sharing photos from your latest night out or inviting friends to an upcoming event.
For all intents and purposes, Facebook became the clean, easily accessible tool that MySpace wasn't. The spam messages were minimal and your eyes weren't being assaulted by gaudy, glitter-based backdrops on every page you visited.
With its growing user base came new functions, such as applications and games. These utilities, although mostly free, came with a price beyond mere wasted time and the occasional extra few dollars to gain new abilities in Farmville.
