URI breaks ground on new LGBTQ Center

Gov. Lincoln Chafee, center, was on hand as The University of Rhode Island broke ground for its new LGBTQ Center on Upper College Road Wednesday morning.

KINGSTON – The University of Rhode Island broke ground Wednesday for a new LGBTQ Center on Upper College Road.

URI is the first institution of higher education in the country to design and build a freestanding LGBTQ Center.

The $2.1 million, 4,300 square-foot center will offer a safe place for all members of the community and is expected to be completed by the spring of 2015.
