Town council considers TVD land parcel purchase

June 26, 2014

CHARLESTOWN — At Monday’s special town council meeting, Interim Town Planner Jane Weidman informed the council that a land parcel, Plat 13 Lot 5, was for sale in the Traditional Village District (TVD) and asked that the council consider possible uses for the site. The parcel serves as the parking lot for the General Stanton Flea Market.
According to the town charter, the TVD’s purpose is to “encourage small-scale business and residential uses consistent with the historic and pedestrian-scale characteristics that exist and which are unique to Charlestown village, to preserve the Town’s heritage, to strengthen the local economy, to continue small town character and aesthetics and to promote the general welfare of the Town.”
Weidman said that she had some ideas for how the site could be used.
“You don’t really have a town center – you could have a concentration of activities in this particular location because it has really good access off of Route One. Some members of the planning commission were interested in recreational uses or possibly open space,” she said.
